CAMBODIA

10 + Days

Cambodia is easy to travel via shuttle bus and tuktuk. The above 10 day itinerary includes a visit to the famous Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, the smaller town of Kampot, famous for the beautiful river that runs through as well as its rice fields, and a stop on one of Cambodia’s islands. In 7 - 10 days you can see quite a lot in Cambodia, but of course if you have longer, there is plenty to see. The standard tourist visa is for 3o days.

1. Phnom Penh   2. Siem Reap   3. Kampot   4. Koh Rong / Koh Rong Sanloem   5. Phnom Penh

How Long?

Ten days to two weeks is enough for a relaxing trip as travel distances are not long. If you have more time, two key destinations can be added to your itinerary:

  • The province of Mondulkiri is famous for jungle trekking and home to an ethical elephant sanctuary run by local hill tribes. To access this untouched region, take a bus from Phnom Penh to Sen Monorum.
The Mondulkiri Project is a Cambodian-run NGO that serves multiple goals: provide a sanctuary for elephants, maintain a protected area of jungle safe from logging, and employ local Indigenous tribes. They currently have 5 elephants, all of whom were rescued. Their elephants are not ridden, and are left to live free in the jungle. To visit the elephants you must hike into the jungle.
My friends and I chose to do the two-day Mondulkiri experience: Day 1 was spent visiting the elephants. That evening we slept in hammocks in a lodge in the jungle. On Day 2 we went with a guide for a 20 km hike through the jungle.

  • Battambang is home to the famous Cambodian bamboo train, and well worth a visit. Easily accessible via Siem Reap.
